The city sits along the Xiang River and has a humid subtropical climate: hot and humid in summer (35-38ยฐC in July-August), mild in winter (3-10ยฐC with no heavy snowfall). For South Asian students, the weather is generally manageable year-round.

Important Admission Requirements
MOE Listed vs Non-MOE: What it Means for You
Changsha Medical University is a Non-MOE listed university for the international MBBS programme. The course is English medium (with Year 1 dedicated to Chinese language foundation), with HSK-4 required by the end of Year 1. CSMU holds PMC/PMDC A-List status, is listed by WHO and WDOMS, and graduates are ECFMG eligible, so Pakistani and globally licensed pathways remain open. Applicants who want a fully English-medium MOE-listed programme should compare against MOE-listed universities in this guide. Confirm current PMDC/PMC NOC status with Titans Abroad before applying.
Language Requirement: HSK
CSMU requires international MBBS students to pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to be promoted into the 5-year clinical medicine curriculum. Year 1 includes intensive Chinese language coursework alongside basic science orientation. Students who do not pass HSK-4 may be required to repeat the language year. Begin Chinese language preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
Pakistan, India and Bangladesh Recognition
CSMU is PMC/PMDC A-List approved for Pakistani graduates, who are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination after MBBS completion. The university has 50+ Pakistani students currently enrolled and multiple graduating batches. Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations; verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad. Bangladeshi applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list; verify the current BMDC list directly before applying.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Changsha Medical University (CSMU) recognised in Pakistan?
Yes. CSMU is approved by PMC/PMDC Pakistan with A-List status - one of the strongest recognitions for Pakistani students studying in China. Pakistani graduates are eligible to sit the NRE/NLE licensing examination. More than 50 Pakistani students are currently studying at CSMU, and multiple batches have graduated. Always verify the current NOC status at the time of application.
Is CSMU on the MOE list for international MBBS?
No. CSMU is not on China's MOE list of English-taught MBBS universities. The international MBBS is English-medium (Year 1 is a Chinese language foundation year) with HSK-4 required after Year 1. Pakistani graduates remain eligible for the PMDC/PMC licensing examination via PMC A-List approval.
What is the HSK requirement at CSMU?
CSMU requires international MBBS students to pass HSK Level 4 by the end of Year 1 to be promoted into the 5-year clinical medicine curriculum. Year 1 includes intensive Chinese language coursework. Students who do not pass HSK-4 may be required to repeat the language year. Begin Chinese language preparation 3-6 months before arrival.
What is the total cost of MBBS at CSMU for 6 years?
Approximately 1,74,300 RMB. Year 1 is 40,800 RMB (all-inclusive: tuition, hostel, development fee, registration, residence permit, medical checkup, insurance, books, bedding). Years 2-6 are 26,700 RMB each. The 1,500 RMB application fee is separate. Food (~1,000 RMB/month), air ticket and stationery are not included. Fees are paid in RMB.
Can the Year 6 internship be done outside China at CSMU?
Yes. CSMU confirms that students can complete their Year 6 internship at CSMU affiliated hospitals in China or in their home country. This is one of the more student-friendly internship policies among non-MOE universities in this guide. Pakistani students should verify with PMC that a home-country internship will be accepted for NRE/NLE eligibility before making this choice.
Does CSMU offer BDS (Dentistry)?
Yes. CSMU offers a Stomatology (BDS) programme of 5 years including a 1-year internship, alongside the MBBS. The fee structure for BDS follows the same pattern as MBBS per the official CSMU fee page. Confirm the current BDS tuition, recognition status and seat availability with Titans Abroad before applying.
What makes CSMU unique among non-MOE universities?
CSMU is historically notable as China's first private medical university (35+ years). Its clinical network of 19 affiliated hospitals + 139 internship hospitals with 25,000+ beds is one of the largest in this guide for a non-MOE institution. The confirmed home-country internship option and two annual intakes (Spring and Fall) also distinguish it from most other non-MOE universities in Hunan Province.
Is IELTS or TOEFL required for admission at CSMU?
No. CSMU does not require IELTS, TOEFL, or any other standardised English test. The admission process requires standard academic documents, a physical examination form, and a police clearance certificate. This makes CSMU one of the most accessible options for students who have not taken international English proficiency tests.
Can Indian students study MBBS at CSMU? Is NEET required?
Indian students are welcome to apply, but Indian applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese medical universities generally do not meet current NMC (India) criteria for FMGE/NExT eligibility under the 2021 NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate regulations. Most Indian students seeking guaranteed NMC compliance choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. Verify the latest NMC requirements directly with the National Medical Commission before applying. NEET (50th percentile General / 40th percentile reserved) remains mandatory for any Indian student studying MBBS abroad.
Can Bangladeshi students study MBBS at CSMU? Is the degree BMDC recognised?
Bangladeshi students may apply, but applicants should note that non-MOE Chinese programmes are not commonly included on BMDC's recognised foreign institutions list, which predominantly covers MOE-listed Chinese medical universities. Verify the current BMDC list directly before applying. Most Bangladeshi students seeking guaranteed BMDC recognition choose MOE-listed Chinese universities instead. SSC and HSC certificates with Physics, Chemistry and Biology are the core academic requirements.
What is the climate like in Changsha?
Changsha has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid (35-38ยฐC in July-August). Winters are mild (3-10ยฐC) with no heavy snowfall. For South Asian students, the weather is generally manageable year-round, and the mild winter is significantly more comfortable than universities in northeastern China such as Harbin or Jiamusi.
Does CSMU offer scholarships for international students?
Yes. CSMU operates a Merit Scholarship (annual award; amounts vary based on academic performance and conduct) and Hunan Provincial Government Scholarships (up to 15,000 RMB/year, competitive) are available for outstanding international students at Hunan universities. Scholarship availability and amounts change each academic year. Do not plan your budget assuming you will receive one.
