The UNESCO Internship Program places currently enrolled Master's and PhD students inside UNESCO Headquarters in Paris for one to six months. It often appears in scholarship lists, but it is an unpaid internship. There is no stipend, no allowance and no salary. What you get is professional experience inside a major UN agency and a contact network that can matter for years. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing page, and this guide explains who should apply, who should not, and how to get the application right.

My honest view: this is a strong move for a Pakistani graduate student who already has funding for Paris, for example through a funded Master's or PhD in Europe, family support or personal savings. If you are hoping it will pay for your time abroad, it will not, and you should look at funded programs first.

What "unpaid" means for your budget in Paris

This is the part most applicants skim, and it is the part that decides whether the internship is realistic for you. UNESCO does not pay interns anything. You pay for your flight to Paris, your French visa, your accommodation in one of Europe's most expensive capital cities, and comprehensive health insurance valid in France for the whole internship.

What UNESCO does give you is the work itself and 2.5 days of leave per month. That is the full list of benefits.

Because the internship can run anywhere from one to six months, your total cost depends heavily on the length you accept. A one-month placement is a very different commitment from a six-month one. Before you apply, work out how long you can actually afford to live in Paris, and be ready to say so if a unit contacts you. If you will need to show funds for a visa, our guide on bank statements and proof of funds covers how Pakistani applicants usually prepare this.

Why enrolment status is the eligibility rule that trips people up

UNESCO only takes students who are currently registered in a graduate program: a Master's degree, a PhD, or an equivalent second university degree or higher. If you have finished your Bachelor's and have not yet started a postgraduate program, you are not eligible. A lot of fresh BS graduates in Pakistan apply in the gap year between degrees and get filtered out for exactly this reason.

The other requirements are short:

  • Minimum age of 20 years
  • Excellent written and spoken English or French
  • Strong computer and office software skills
  • Enrolment in a Master's, PhD or equivalent graduate program at the time you apply

The program is open to students from all countries with no national quota, so Pakistani students can apply on the same footing as anyone else. Meeting every requirement does not guarantee a placement, though. The program is highly competitive.

Picking a sector that matches your degree

Interns are placed across UNESCO's main sectors: Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information, and Law. When you fill out the form you select your field of specialization, and this choice carries more weight than many applicants expect.

The strongest applications tie the sector directly to what the student is studying. An education policy Master's student should apply to Education. A science PhD student should apply to Natural Sciences. Picking a sector because it sounds prestigious, or because you think it has more openings, usually leads to a generic motivation letter, and generic applications are much less likely to be selected.

Documents to have ready before you open the form

Prepare all of these first, because of the time limit explained in the next section:

  1. ID, or a certificate of enrolment, or your diploma
  2. A medical certificate from a qualified practitioner confirming you are fit to work
  3. A motivation letter of up to 5,000 characters
  4. Your CV or rรฉsumรฉ
  5. French or English translations of any documents that are not already in one of those languages

Pakistani university documents are usually in English already, but if anything is in Urdu, get a proper translation done in advance. The enrolment certificate is the document that proves you meet the core rule, so make sure it is recent and clearly shows your current program. Our documents checklist for international scholarships has general tips on getting these papers in order.

The one-hour application window

The application must be completed in a single session within 1 hour. You cannot start, save and come back the next day. If you try to write your motivation letter inside the form, you will run out of time.

Here is the order that works:

  1. Write and polish your motivation letter and CV offline first.
  2. Collect your enrolment certificate, medical fitness certificate and any translations as ready-to-upload files.
  3. Create an account and apply through the UNESCO internship portal.
  4. Fill out the form and select your field of specialization.
  5. Upload all documents, including the motivation letter, CV, enrolment certificate and medical certificate.
  6. Check that your email and phone number will stay valid for at least 6 months.

Applications are submitted through a rolling online portal at internship.unesco.org. Active internship positions are also posted on the UNESCO Careers Portal (Inspira) under Internships, where you can create a profile and set alerts for new postings. Since UNESCO links to more than one portal, check the official internships page to see which one is currently used for submissions.

The six months after you submit

There is no fixed results date. Your application stays active in the portal for six months from the day you submit it, and during that time any relevant UNESCO unit can contact you about an available position. If you are selected, UNESCO contacts you directly. If nobody contacts you in those six months, that is the outcome.

The intake is described as rolling with no single annual deadline, yet a specific closing date has also been listed for the current cycle. Do not rely on either. Check the official internships page for the current status before you plan around a date.

Two practical points follow from this. First, use a permanent email address, not a university account that might expire when your semester ends. Second, think about timing: if you are contacted in month five, can you still take time off your degree and fund a stay in Paris? Apply when the six-month window lines up with a period you could actually travel.

Visa steps for Pakistani applicants

You arrange and pay for your own French visa. Depending on your home country and how long the internship lasts, international students typically need either a French short-stay visa or an internship visa. UNESCO does not provide a formal invitation letter until after you are selected, so you cannot start the visa process early.

For Pakistani students, visa applications go through the French Embassy in Islamabad, which handles short-stay (C) and long-stay (D) visas for UNESCO internships in Paris. Contact them to confirm the correct intern visa category and document list for your case.

Where applicants go wrong

Most failed applications come down to a few avoidable mistakes.

Treating it as funding. Students apply, get an offer, and then realise they cannot cover months of Paris rent. Settle your budget before you apply, not after.

Applying between degrees. If your Master's admission is confirmed but you have not enrolled yet, wait until you are registered and have an enrolment certificate.

Wasting the motivation letter. You have up to 5,000 characters. Use them to connect your research or coursework to the specific work of your chosen sector. A letter that could be sent to any UN agency will not stand out.

Forgetting the medical certificate. It is easy to overlook, and without it your upload is incomplete. Get it from a qualified practitioner before you start the one-hour session.

Letting contact details lapse. Selected candidates are contacted through the details in the portal. A dead email address means a missed offer.

Is it worth it if it pays nothing?

For the right student, yes. If you are aiming for international development, education policy, diplomacy, cultural preservation or multilateral work, a UNESCO internship is a strong CV credential. Alumni have gone on to roles at UNESCO, other UN agencies, NGOs and government ministries. The best way to approach it is as a complement to a funded degree, ideally one that already has you in Europe, rather than as a standalone opportunity. If your main goal right now is a fully funded degree, start with our all France scholarships guide and come back to UNESCO once you are enrolled.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UNESCO internship paid?

No. There is no stipend or remuneration. You also fund your own travel, visa, accommodation and health insurance. Interns get 2.5 days of leave per month.

Can I apply with only a Bachelor's degree?

Not unless you are currently enrolled in a graduate program. Only students registered in a Master's, PhD or equivalent second degree are eligible.

Can Pakistani students apply?

Yes. The program is open to students from all countries with no national quota restrictions. You still need to meet the enrolment, age and language requirements.

How long does my application stay active?

Six months from the date you submit it. If a unit wants you, UNESCO contacts you directly. There is no set timeline for that contact.

Do I apply in English or French?

Either. You need excellent English or French, and any documents not in those languages must be translated into one of them.

When can I apply for the visa?

Only after selection, because UNESCO does not issue a formal invitation letter before then. Contact the French Embassy in Islamabad about the right visa category for your internship length.

Before applying, check the current process on the official UNESCO internships page, and keep the full scholarship page handy for the key details.
