Royal College of Music (RCM) International Scholarships: Auditions, Awards and How Funding Works

RCM scholarships are decided by your audition alone, with named awards from partial to full international fees. Here is how the process works for Pakistani musicians.

The Royal College of Music in London does something most universities do not: it has no scholarship form. If you apply for a performance or composition course and audition, you are automatically in the running for a scholarship. That sounds generous, and it is, but it also means your audition is doing two jobs at once. It decides whether you get a place and whether you get money. For a Pakistani musician thinking about a London conservatoire, that changes how you should prepare. You can read the full scholarship details on our listing, and this guide explains how the system works in practice.

This suits classically trained performers, singers, composers and conductors who already play at a serious level and can put together a strong audition programme. It does not suit someone hoping to write their way into funding with a good essay. There is no essay round for the scholarship. The music decides.

How an RCM audition doubles as your scholarship application

Every applicant to an RCM performance or composition course is considered for a scholarship, whether they audition in person in London or submit a video. After the audition, if you are offered a place, the Admissions and Scholarships Committee nominates you for an available award. Notification usually arrives with the offer letter, typically within around two weeks of the audition.

So there is no second deadline to miss and no separate paperwork. The flip side is that you cannot compensate for a weak audition with strong documents. If the panel hears an average performance, an average outcome follows.

What a named scholarship actually pays

RCM scholarships are not cash in your bank account. They are named awards deducted directly from your tuition invoice. Once an award is confirmed, its value is applied straight to the fee bill. The money behind them comes from the RCM's Future Music Fund and from individual donors who fund awards in their own names.

  • Named scholarships range from partial to full international tuition fees.
  • A donation-funded full international scholarship is valued at roughly ยฃ26,000+ depending on the course.
  • Full international-fee scholarships exist across many instrument and voice categories.
  • Almost half of all RCM students receive some form of financial support from the College.

That last point is encouraging, but read it carefully. "Some form of financial support" covers a wide range, and many awards are partial. Plan as if you will receive a partial fee reduction, and treat a full-fee award as a welcome surprise rather than the baseline.

The fee waiver will not pay your rent

Because awards go against tuition, they do not cover accommodation. London living costs are high, and a fee reduction does nothing for your monthly rent, food and transport. Before you accept a place, work out how you will cover living costs for the full length of the course. If you will need a UK Student visa, our guide to bank statements and proof of funds is a sensible next read.

An example of a highly specific award

The Alastair Jackson International Opera Award shows how targeted some RCM awards are. It is reserved for an exceptional singer from Australia or New Zealand on the two-year postgraduate Artist Diploma in Opera, and it includes a full-fee scholarship plus a travel and living-expense allowance. A Pakistani singer cannot get this one, but it illustrates the point: some named awards carry nationality or discipline conditions, and you should find out which ones apply to you.

Eligibility for Pakistani applicants

The general requirement is simple: a successful application and audition for an RCM performance, composition or conducting course. Video auditions are accepted, so applying from Pakistan is possible without flying to London first. You will also need to meet the RCM's standard academic and English-language entry requirements for international applicants.

Named awards are a different matter. Some have nationality or discipline criteria, so check how your nationality is treated for any specific named scholarship before counting on it. If you hold a multi-year award, you also need to maintain satisfactory academic and artistic progress to keep it.

If something is unclear, the RCM gives a direct contact for international scholarship eligibility questions: admissions@rcm.ac.uk. Ask specific questions, such as whether a named award in your instrument category is open to Pakistani nationals.

The paperwork behind the audition

The scholarship itself needs nothing extra, but the course application does. Expect to prepare:

  • The RCM online application form and a personal statement
  • An audition recording, or your live audition programme
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • English-language proficiency evidence (IELTS or TOEFL) if English is not your first language
  • A passport copy and, once accepted, the visa and CAS documentation for the UK Student visa

Pakistani transcripts and certificates often need attestation before they are accepted for visa purposes. Our IBCC and MOFA attestation guide covers that process.

From application to enrolment, in order

  1. Applications open in September. Submit your course application through the RCM's online portal by the published deadline for your course.
  2. Prepare your audition materials, or book a slot in the London audition period (November-December).
  3. Audition in person or by video. This same audition triggers scholarship consideration.
  4. If you are offered a place, the Admissions and Scholarships Committee nominates you for an available award.
  5. Award notification usually comes with the offer, typically within around two weeks, and is applied to your tuition invoice.
  6. Enrolment is in September of the following year.

Deadlines vary by course and audition round, so confirm the exact date for your programme on the official portal rather than assuming a single cut-off.

Why the live London audition is worth the trip

The RCM accepts video, but live auditions are generally viewed most favourably for both admission and scholarship purposes. Since the audition is the only thing the scholarship decision rests on, this matters more here than at most institutions. If you can afford the travel, attending the November-December audition period in London gives you the best shot.

If travel is not realistic, a video audition is still a valid route. Just make it excellent: good sound, a well-lit setting, and a programme you have performed many times.

Where applicants lose out

Applying late. Some award pools and audition slots fill before the final application deadline. Applying in September or October puts you in a better position than applying in the last week.

A one-dimensional programme. Choose a varied, well-contrasted programme that shows range across style and technical demand. A programme stuck in one mood tells the panel very little.

Ignoring living costs. As above, a fee award leaves rent and daily expenses untouched. Students who budget only for tuition run into trouble in their first term.

Assuming every named award is open to you. Check nationality and discipline criteria before you build your financial plan around a specific award.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate application for an RCM scholarship?

No. Every applicant auditioning for a performance or composition course is automatically considered. There is no separate scholarship form.

How much will an RCM scholarship cover?

It varies by named award. Some cover part of international tuition, while fully funded named scholarships can cover the entire international fee, occasionally with a living or travel allowance. A donation-funded full international scholarship is valued at roughly ยฃ26,000+ depending on the course.

Can I audition by video from Pakistan?

Yes, video auditions are accepted. Attending the in-person London audition period is generally recommended where you can manage it.

Are scholarships available for postgraduate and doctoral study?

Scholarships are available for Bachelor's, Master's, Artist Diploma and some doctoral or research routes, though award pools and amounts differ by level.

Will I keep my scholarship for every year of the course?
