How the OshSU International Medical Faculty Scholarship works: a USD 200 merit stipend for the top five students and a 50% tuition cut for three low-income students each semester, awarded only after enrollment.

Most scholarship guides for MBBS in Kyrgyzstan oversell. They talk about "scholarships available" without saying how many, how much, or who decides. The Osh State University International Medical Faculty Scholarship is different because the numbers are small and published: a USD 200 merit stipend for the five best students each semester, and a 50% cut in the tuition contract payment for three low-income students each semester. That is the whole scheme, plus access to a separate pool of university-wide awards.

So this guide is mostly about expectations. If you are a Pakistani student comparing medical universities in Kyrgyzstan, this award can trim your costs. It will not pay for your degree. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing, and the sections below explain how the awards are decided and how to give yourself a fair shot at them.

A small, university-run award for MBBS students in Osh

Osh State University (OshSU) is in southern Kyrgyzstan. Its International Medical Faculty teaches an English-medium, MBBS-equivalent curriculum and is recognized by the World Health Organization. It has become one of the more established choices for South Asian students, and the number of Pakistani students there is growing.

The scholarship is administered directly by the university's International Medical Department (sometimes written as OshSU-IMF). It is not a government program and it is not something an admission consultant arranges for you. That matters, because a lot of "scholarship" talk around Central Asian MBBS seats comes from agents and cannot be checked. This one is documented by the university itself, including in an International Medical Department benefits announcement on the official site.

Who does it suit? Students who are already set on OshSU for other reasons, who expect to finish near the top of their class, or whose family income is genuinely low. Who should not count on it? Anyone whose budget only works if a scholarship comes through. With eight targeted slots per semester across the department, the odds are simply too narrow to plan around.

USD 200 for the top five, half the tuition for three

There are really two separate awards inside this scheme, and they reward different things.

The merit stipend

Each semester, the five best-performing international medical students receive a merit scholarship of USD 200. Selection is strictly by GPA ranking within the department. There is no essay and no interview mentioned. Your grades decide it.

Be realistic about what USD 200 per semester does. It helps with books, some living costs or a few months of small expenses. It does not touch the bulk of your tuition.

The need-based tuition reduction

Three low-income students each semester get their tuition contract payment reduced by 50%. This is the more valuable of the two awards by a wide margin, because it applies to tuition rather than being a flat stipend. Low-income status is verified through documentation that the department requests.

Academic Council scholarships

Separately, the university's Academic Council recognizes strong academic and extracurricular performance across the whole university. Around 22 scholarships are awarded annually across departments, for students who combine academic results with leadership or community involvement. These are not reserved for international medical students, so you would be competing with the wider student body.

On top of the money, the source of value most students actually care about is the degree itself: WHO recognition of the International Medical Faculty supports licensing pathways in multiple countries after graduation. If you plan to practise in Pakistan, check how that recognition fits the licensing requirements you will face, because the scholarship has no bearing on that question.

Why you cannot apply before you are admitted

This is the point most applicants miss. There is no pre-admission scholarship application. The awards are allocated after enrollment, based on semester performance and financial documentation. Admission to the university is a prerequisite.

In practice that means you apply for the MBBS program through the standard international admissions route, pay your fees as normal, and only become eligible once you are enrolled. The first scholarship review happens at the end of Semester 1 or the start of Semester 2, using your Semester 1 results.

If an agent tells you they can "secure" this scholarship for you before you fly, that does not match how the university describes the scheme. Treat that claim with suspicion.

Eligibility once you are enrolled

The eligibility rules are short. You need to be:

  • Enrolled as a student in Osh State University's International Medical Faculty (the MBBS-equivalent program).
  • For the merit award, ranked among the top 5 students by GPA within the department for that semester.
  • For the need-based award, able to show low-income status through the documentation the department asks for.
  • In good academic standing and compliant with university conduct requirements.

Pakistani students enrolled in the International Medical Faculty compete as international medical students on the same basis as everyone else in the department. Nationality is not the filter here. Your GPA and, for the tuition reduction, your financial situation are.

Paperwork the International Medical Department will ask for

Expect to provide the following when a review comes round:

  1. Proof of enrollment in the International Medical Faculty.
  2. Your semester GPA or transcript record, for merit consideration.
  3. Income or financial documentation, for need-based consideration.
  4. A valid passport and your student visa or residency documentation.
  5. Any additional forms the International Medical Department requests directly.

The income documents are the ones worth preparing early. Family income proof from Pakistan can take time to gather and may need to be in a form the department accepts. Our scholarship documents checklist for Pakistani students covers how to organise financial papers so they are ready when someone asks.

From admission to your first scholarship review

The process runs on the semester cycle rather than on a single deadline:

  1. Apply for and secure admission to the International Medical Faculty MBBS program through the standard international admissions process. Admissions applications open in spring (approximately March to June).
  2. Start Semester 1 in September and work hard from the first week, since merit awards are ranked by GPA.
  3. Watch for announcements from the International Medical Department each semester about scholarship allocation.
  4. For the need-based tuition discount, submit your income and financial documentation when the department requests it.
  5. If you are selected, the stipend or tuition reduction is applied for that semester.

Reviews then repeat at the end of each semester. Re-selection is not guaranteed. It depends on continued performance or continued need, so winning once does not lock in the award for the rest of your degree.

Because the timing of each review is tied to the department's own announcements, confirm the exact dates for your intake directly with the International Medical Department or on the official OshSU website.

Where students go wrong with this scholarship

The biggest mistake is choosing OshSU because of the scholarship. Kyrgyzstan's MBBS tuition and living costs are already low compared with Western options, and that low base cost is the real saving. The scholarship trims costs at the margin for the strongest and most financially constrained students in each cohort. Build your budget assuming you will pay full tuition every semester, and treat any award as a bonus.

The second mistake is a slow first semester. Many students spend the first few months settling in, and that is understandable. But the merit award is a hard GPA ranking with only five slots, and the first review uses Semester 1 results. If you want a chance at it, your grades need to be strong from the start.

Third, do not assume the numbers are fixed. Award amounts and slot numbers can change from year to year. Before you enroll, ask the International Medical Department to confirm the current terms in writing if possible.

Finally, compare. Scholarship availability varies significantly between Kyrgyz medical universities, and most of them work on a paid-seat model with only small merit or need-based awards. Put total cost (tuition plus living expenses) side by side for several universities before you commit. Our guide to all Kyrgyzstan scholarships is a good place to start that comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does this scholarship fully fund an MBBS degree in Kyrgyzstan?

No. It gives a USD 200 semester merit stipend to the top 5 students and a 50% tuition discount to 3 low-income students per semester. It supplements tuition payment for a few students. Everyone else pays in full.

Can I apply for the scholarship along with my admission application?

No. You must first be admitted and enrolled in the International Medical Faculty. The awards are allocated through semester academic and financial reviews after enrollment.

Can I receive the award every semester?

Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. Each semester is a fresh review, and keeping the award depends on your continued GPA ranking or your continued financial need.

Is the International Medical Faculty recognized internationally?

Yes. It is recognized by the World Health Organization and teaches an English-medium curriculum aligned with international standards.

How many students get an award each semester?

Based on the university's own published figures, typically 5 students receive the merit stipend and 3 receive the need-based tuition reduction per semester. The Academic Council's university-wide scholarships (around 22 a year) are a separate pool.
