Most fully funded PhD money for Pakistani students comes with strings: a specific country, a partner university list, or a bond to come home. The Meta Research PhD Fellowship is different. It is a corporate award from Meta (Facebook) for full-time doctoral students working in AI, machine learning, computer vision, AR/VR, systems, privacy and technology policy, and it is open to PhD students at any accredited university in any country. If you are already enrolled in a PhD and doing research Meta cares about, this is one of the few awards you can apply for from where you are. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing.

The catch is simple. This is not a way to get into a PhD. It funds people who are already in one, and it rewards a research record, not grades or university names.

Who this fellowship is really for

The program supports doctoral research in areas tied to Meta's platforms and infrastructure. The fields listed are artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer vision, AR/VR and human-computer interaction, computer systems and networking, privacy and data practices, and technology policy. Meta adjusts this list from cycle to cycle to match its current product and infrastructure investments, so the list you read today may not be the list you apply against.

It suits a PhD student who already has something to show: a paper, a preprint, a project under review. It is a poor fit if you are a master's student hoping to fund a future PhD, or if your PhD is in a field outside the listed areas. A strong thesis in, say, civil engineering will not be read generously just because it uses some machine learning on the side. The research has to sit inside one of Meta's priority topics.

For Pakistani applicants, the good news is in the eligibility wording. There is no nationality or citizenship restriction stated in the program materials, and the award is explicitly open to students at accredited universities in any country. That includes PhD students at Pakistani universities with active programs in relevant fields, as well as Pakistanis who have already moved abroad. Selection leans on your research statement, publication record and recommendation letters rather than university prestige alone, which is a real opening if your department is not well known internationally.

What $42,000 a year and two years of fees actually mean

Selected fellows get two years of paid tuition and fees, plus a $42,000 annual stipend. The stipend is meant for living expenses and research-related conference travel. For a student whose university does not offer assistantship income, that package can fully fund the doctoral years it covers.

The full list of what the fellowship includes:

  • Two years of paid tuition and fees
  • A $42,000 annual stipend for living expenses and conference travel
  • A paid visit to the annual Fellowship Summit at a Meta location, where fellows present their research and meet Meta researchers in related areas
  • Networking with other fellows from around the world
  • No intellectual property claim on your research

Two points here are easy to skim past but matter a lot. First, Meta states that it takes no intellectual property claim over the fellow's research. Your dissertation stays yours. Second, there is no requirement to work at Meta afterward. Many fellows do go on to Meta Research internships, but that is a choice, not a condition. If you plan an academic career, or want to keep your options open, this is a much cleaner deal than funding that ties you to an employer.

Note that the funding covers two years. If your PhD runs longer, you will still need a plan for the remaining time, whether that is your university's own funding or something else.

The eligibility rules, read carefully

The requirements are short:

  • You must be enrolled as a full-time PhD student at an accredited university, in any country.
  • You must be actively engaged in doctoral research during the fellowship period.
  • Your research area must align with one of Meta's listed priority fields for that cycle.
  • No restriction on nationality or citizenship is stated in the program materials.

The word that trips people up is "full-time." Part-time PhD students, which includes many working lecturers in Pakistan who enroll alongside a teaching job, should check carefully whether their status counts. The second trap is timing: you need to be doing active research during the fellowship period, so someone about to submit their thesis is in a weaker position than someone with years of work ahead.

Because the program does not appear to restrict countries and does not use a per-university nomination cap, it is sensible to verify current-cycle details directly on the official portal when you apply. Corporate research priorities and deadlines can shift from year to year.

The five documents and which one carries the weight

You will need:

  1. The online application form on the Meta Research Fellowship portal
  2. A research statement describing your current and planned doctoral research
  3. A curriculum vitae with your publication history
  4. Two to three letters of recommendation, typically including one from your PhD advisor
  5. Proof of current PhD enrollment

The research statement is the document that decides most applications. A generic summary of your PhD will not do. It needs to say clearly which of Meta's current priority areas your work belongs to and why the problem matters there. Write it so a researcher outside your exact subfield can follow the argument in one read.

Your CV should list preprints and papers under review as well as published work. Reviewers want to see an active research pipeline. A second-year student with two solid preprints often looks stronger than one with a single old conference paper.

For letters, choose people who can speak specifically to your research ability. A professor who taught you a course and gave you an A is a weak choice next to someone who has watched you design experiments and handle setbacks. Your advisor should almost always be one of them. If you are organizing your paperwork for several applications at once, our documents checklist for international scholarships may help.

Applying through the portal

  1. Confirm your research area matches one of Meta's current fellowship focus areas on the official portal.
  2. Create an account on the Meta Research PhD Fellowship application portal.
  3. Prepare and upload your research statement, CV and proof of enrollment.
  4. Arrange for your recommenders to submit their letters through the same portal before the deadline.
  5. Submit before the annual deadline. Finalists may be contacted for further discussion before final selection.

Step 4 is where Pakistani applicants most often lose time. Professors are busy, some are travelling, and a few will not open a portal link until you remind them twice. Send your recommenders your CV, research statement and a short note on what you would like them to highlight, and give them weeks, not days.

How the yearly cycle runs

The cycle repeats each year, but exact dates vary. Based on the most recent pattern:

StageTiming
Application portal opensMid-year (varies by cycle)
Application deadlineSeptember 20, 2026 was the most recently observed date
Finalist reviewThe following months
Fellows announcedTypically early in the following calendar year

Treat any date here as a guide only, and confirm the current deadline on the official portal. Portal submission issues close to the cutoff are common when applicant volume is high, so aim to submit well before the last day.

Where strong applicants still go wrong

The most common mistake is applying with the wrong framing. Students describe their thesis in the language of their own department and leave the reviewer to work out the link to Meta's priority areas. Do that work for them in the first paragraph.

The second mistake is holding back because your university is not famous. The program does not gate on institutional prestige. A student at a Pakistani university with a clear research agenda and real output can compete. What will hold you back is a thin CV, so the year before you apply is the time to push papers out as preprints.

Third, people forget that the eligible areas change. Something that fit last cycle might not fit this one. Read the current list before you start writing, not after.

Finally, do not confuse this with an admission route. If you are still looking for a funded PhD place, start with our all global scholarships guide and come back to Meta once you are enrolled.
