Most funded opportunities Pakistani students chase in Germany are full degrees. The Max Planck Institute Research Internship is different. It is a 12 to 14 week research placement at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS), and it is fully funded: a monthly living stipend, free housing and a round-trip flight to Germany. You stay enrolled in your home university, spend a few months working inside a research group, and come back with real lab experience on your CV.

This guide covers who it suits, what it pays for, how the application works and where applicants tend to slip. For the condensed version, see the full scholarship details.

A short research stint, not a degree scholarship

The Max Planck Society is an independent German research organization that runs 86 institutes across the country, and its researchers include more than 30 Nobel Prize winners. MPI-IS has campuses in Stuttgart and Tübingen and works on machine learning, computer vision, robotics, autonomous systems and related AI sciences.

Interns join a research group on projects that are already running. Depending on the group, that can mean running experiments, writing code, analyzing data or helping with a paper that is being prepared for publication. Past interns have contributed to papers presented at venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR and CVPR. That is the real value here. A few months inside an active group gives you something concrete to point to when you later apply for a funded Master's or PhD.

It suits a student who already has some coding, maths or research exposure and wants to test whether research is for them. It suits a PhD student who wants time in a strong group outside their home lab. It is a poor fit if you are looking for a way to settle in Germany or fund a full degree, because the placement is short and you return home at the end.

What the funding package covers, and what it leaves out

The package has three money parts:

  • A monthly living stipend meant to cover your living expenses during the internship
  • Free housing in Germany
  • A round-trip international flight to Germany

On top of that, there is no application fee and no German language requirement, so applying costs you nothing but time. The exact stipend amount is not stated in the published program details, so do not plan your budget around a figure you saw on a forum. Ask about it if you are shortlisted.

Housing and flights are the two costs that usually kill short research visits for Pakistani students, so having both covered matters. What you should still budget for yourself are the costs before you leave: visa fees, document attestation, travel to the embassy in Islamabad, and some cash for your first days before the first stipend payment arrives. These are not listed as covered.

Eligibility is wider than the name suggests

The internship is open to international students from all countries, so Pakistani students can apply. You must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD program. Fresh graduates who are no longer enrolled do not fit the stated requirement.

The core fields are Computer Science and closely related subjects, including Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Electrical Engineering. The institute's field list covers Computer Science, AI and machine learning, robotics and intelligent systems, and mathematics and statistics.

The less obvious part: students from social sciences, economics, law and humanities are also eligible if they have interdisciplinary research interests in intelligent systems. You still need some background relevant to intelligent systems or data-driven research. If you are an economics student who has worked with data and is interested in how AI affects markets or policy, this is a real opening. If you are a law student with no technical or data exposure at all, a generic application will struggle. Show the link between your field and what MPI-IS actually works on.

A short document list, so each item has to work hard

The application is light compared with most scholarships. You need:

  1. A CV or résumé
  2. Academic transcripts
  3. Contact details of at least one reference
  4. A motivation letter (optional, but strongly recommended)
  5. A valid passport

Because there are no essays, test scores or long forms, the CV carries most of the weight. Put research experience, publications, independent projects, GitHub work, final year project results and any lab assistant roles near the top. A CV built for a job fair, with a long "objectives" section and a list of soft skills, wastes the space you have.

Treat the motivation letter as required. It is the only place you can explain which research area you want to work in and why you are ready for it. Before writing, look through the Max Planck Society institutes directory and the MPI-IS research areas so you can name the kind of work you want to join instead of writing about "AI" in general.

For a general list of how Pakistani applicants should prepare transcripts and passports, our documents checklist for international scholarships is a useful starting point.

Applying through the CIS portal

  1. Go to the official Max Planck internship application portal.
  2. Create an account and fill in the application form.
  3. Upload your CV and academic transcripts, and enter your reference's contact details.
  4. Add your motivation letter.
  5. Submit before November 1 for a May-August start, or about 5 months before your intended start date for other periods.
  6. A committee reviews applications. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for a short interview.

Your reference's details go in at the application stage, so tell your supervisor or professor before you submit. Pick someone who knows your work and who answers email. A slow reference is a common and avoidable reason a good file stalls.

If you get an interview, expect questions about what you have built or researched. Be ready to explain one project in detail: what you did yourself, what went wrong and what you would change.

Reading the November 1 deadline correctly

The main cycle is the May-August internship, and its deadline is November 1 of the previous year. For a May-August 2026 placement, the deadline was November 1, 2025, and that cycle is closed. For a May-August 2027 start, the deadline is November 1, 2026. The portal typically opens around June.

For any other start date, the rule is to apply about 5 months before you want to arrive. If you want to begin in, say, a winter or spring slot, count back 5 months and treat that as your deadline.

Dates can shift between cycles, so confirm the current deadline on the official portal before you plan around it. As of today, anyone targeting summer 2027 has only weeks left, which leaves little time to polish a CV and motivation letter from scratch.

The visa step Pakistani students underestimate

Getting selected is not the last hurdle. You will need a German visa for the internship, and appointment slots at the German Embassy in Islamabad fill up quickly. Start the visa process as soon as you have your offer, and check with the embassy which visa category applies to your internship length. The embassy is at Ramna 5/4, Diplomatic Enclave, Islamabad (phone +92-51-2279430).

Once you are in Germany, the Embassy of Pakistan in Berlin handles consular services for Pakistani nationals. It is at Schaperstraße 29, 10719 Berlin (phone +49-30-21244310).

Visa officers look closely at whether your documents are consistent and whether your plans make sense. Our guide on common student visa rejection reasons for Pakistani students covers the mistakes that apply here too.

Where applicants usually go wrong

The first mistake is skipping the motivation letter because it says optional. With only a CV and transcripts, your file looks like every other one. Write it.

The second is missing the timing. Students hear about the internship in December, find out the summer deadline already passed, and give up. Either aim for the next November 1, or use the 5-month rule for a different start date.

The third is a vague research interest. "I am passionate about AI" tells the committee nothing. Saying you want to work on robot learning or computer vision, and showing a project that points that way, does.

The fourth applies to non-CS students: assuming you will be read the same way as a CS applicant. You will not. Spell out how your field connects to intelligent systems and what data or technical skills you bring.

Last, be realistic. A fully funded placement with no fee and an English-only environment draws strong applicants from many countries. Apply, but keep other plans in parallel. Our all Germany scholarships guide lists other options worth considering alongside this one.
