The National Outreach Program (NOP) at the Lahore University of Management Sciences is a merit-cum-need scholarship for Pakistani students who have the grades for LUMS but not the money. It is a full scholarship on tuition, approximately PKR 2 million a year. For a family on an ordinary income, that figure alone decides whether LUMS is even on the list.

This guide is for students in Pakistan doing FSc, ICS, I.Com, FA or O/A Levels who are thinking about LUMS for a bachelor's degree. If your family can comfortably pay the fees, NOP is not meant for you, because financial need is half of the selection. If your family cannot, read on. You can also see the full scholarship details on our listing.

Why the December to February window decides everything

The LUMS admission portal opens once a year, in December, and the deadline falls in February. That is the only window. Miss it and you wait a full year for the next one. There is no rolling admission and no second round to fall back on.

The NOP itself has no separate scholarship form. According to LUMS, the National Outreach Programme scholarship is awarded to eligible candidates through the admissions process. So applying for NOP really means applying to LUMS properly, on time, with your financial need documented. Dates can shift slightly between cycles, so check the exact deadline on the LUMS admissions portal as soon as December arrives.

When to apply: 1st year versus 2nd year

The program prefers early-stage applicants. NOP is best applied for in your 1st year of studies. Students who miss that can still apply in December of their 2nd year. The early route matters because shortlisted students go through a summer coaching program before the scholarship is confirmed, and starting early gives you more time to prepare for it.

If you are unsure which stage of your intermediate or A Levels counts as your 1st year for NOP purposes, ask the LUMS Financial Aid Office before the portal opens rather than guessing. Getting this wrong can cost you a year.

Full tuition at PKR 2 million a year, and the costs to confirm

The core of NOP is full tuition. At roughly PKR 2 million a year, that is the single largest cost of a LUMS degree, and it is the part most families cannot cover. NOP students also get the same access as everyone else on campus:

  • hostels, the sports complex, gym and other campus facilities
  • the career placement office, internships and exchange opportunities
  • academic mentorship and the LUMS alumni network

Be careful with one point. The coverage is described as full tuition. Access to hostels and facilities is listed, but the material does not break down whether hostel fees, meals, books or living costs are paid for. Before you plan your budget, read the official NOP page, which covers scholarship coverage and the financial assessment process, and ask the Financial Aid Office directly what your award includes.

For Accounting and Finance students at the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB), there is a practical bonus: the ACF program gives up to 9 ACCA exemptions out of 13 papers. If you want a professional accounting qualification alongside your degree, that saves real time and exam fees later.

Who the NOP is designed for

The selection rests on two things at once: academic merit and genuine financial need. You need both. A brilliant student from a well-off family will not get NOP, and neither will a deserving family whose child cannot meet the LUMS academic bar.

The eligibility requirements are:

  • FSc Pre-Medical, FSc Pre-Engineering, ICS, I.Com/FA Humanities, O/A Levels, or an equivalent qualification
  • demonstrated financial need
  • an LCAT or SAT score
  • a strong personal statement showing your goals, achievements and reasons for choosing LUMS

Your school board or city does not matter. A student from a small-town board school competes on the same terms as someone from a big Lahore or Karachi school. That is the whole point of an outreach program, and students from smaller cities often rule themselves out without reason.

LCAT or SAT: picking the right test

You need at least one of the two. Here is how to choose:

  • Take the LCAT (LUMS Common Admission Test) if LUMS is your only target. It is cheaper and Pakistan-focused.
  • Take the SAT if you also want to apply to universities abroad. It costs more but is valid for both LUMS and foreign universities.
  • If your budget allows, sitting both gives you the most flexibility.

For most NOP applicants, money is tight by definition. If you have no realistic plan to apply abroad, the LCAT is the sensible choice. Spend the difference on preparation instead.

The personal statement carries the most weight

This is where most applicants underperform. The personal statement carries the highest weightage in the LUMS selection process, more than many students assume. A good test score will not rescue a generic essay.

Your statement should cover your background, your co-curricular activities, the challenges you have faced, what you have achieved, why you want LUMS specifically, and where you want to go after. For an NOP applicant, the challenges part is often your strongest material. Write about real circumstances plainly, without exaggeration and without turning it into a sob story. Committees can tell the difference.

Common essay mistakes to avoid:

  • writing it in the last week before the February deadline
  • listing achievements without explaining what they meant to you
  • a "why LUMS" section that could be about any university
  • no clear goal at the end

Documents to gather before December

Start collecting these well before the portal opens. Income proof in particular can take time if a parent works informally or is self-employed.

  1. LCAT or SAT score report
  2. Academic transcripts and mark sheets
  3. Personal statement or essay
  4. Teacher evaluations
  5. Financial need documentation (family income proof)
  6. Co-curricular achievement records (strongly recommended)

Teacher evaluations depend on other people's schedules, so ask your teachers early. For a broader list of paperwork habits that help with any scholarship, see our scholarship documents checklist.

From portal to scholarship: the full sequence

  1. Apply online through the LUMS admission portal during the December to February window.
  2. Select two school preferences. Majors are not locked in the first year.
  3. Submit your LCAT or SAT score with the application.
  4. Write and submit a carefully crafted personal statement.
  5. If shortlisted, attend the summer coaching program.
  6. Clear the evaluation after coaching to receive the NOP full scholarship.

Exactly when shortlisting and coaching happen relative to your admission decision can vary, so follow the dates LUMS gives you in your own cycle.

What happens at the summer coaching program

Shortlisted candidates attend a summer coaching program at the LUMS campus. It covers academic preparation across LUMS subjects, gives you a feel for the university's learning environment, and lets faculty evaluate your potential, motivation and fit. Your performance, attitude and engagement are all assessed. Think of it as a month-long extended interview. Students who take it seriously and participate actively have a much better chance of receiving the full scholarship. Students who treat it as a holiday after exams do not.

Choosing your two school preferences

LUMS has five schools, and you pick two preferences when you apply:

  • SDSB (Suleman Dawood School of Business), AACSB-accredited, for Management Sciences and Accounting and Finance
  • SBASSE (School of Science and Engineering), for Computer Science, Electrical and Chemical Engineering, Biology and Physics
  • MGSHSS (Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences), for Economics, Political Science, History, Psychology and Sociology
  • SAHSOL (Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law), for the LLB
  • the School of Education

The first year at LUMS is exploratory, so you are not locked into a major. Pick preferences that match your intermediate subjects and real interests, but do not lose sleep over committing to one field forever at this stage.

Our honest take

NOP suits a strong student from a family that genuinely cannot pay LUMS fees and who is willing to put serious work into an essay and a summer of assessment. It is a poor fit if you are hoping for a quick scholarship form: there are several stages, and the coaching evaluation is real. The biggest avoidable failures are missing the once-a-year window, under-investing in the personal statement, and arriving at summer coaching unprepared. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to fill a separate NOP application?

No separate scholarship application is required. The NOP is awarded to eligible candidates through the LUMS admissions process, so your admission application and financial need documents are what count. Confirm current procedures on the official NOP page.

Does NOP cover hostel and living costs?

The scholarship is described as covering full tuition, approximately PKR 2 million a year, with access to hostels and campus facilities. Whether hostel fees or living costs are paid is not clearly stated, so ask the LUMS Financial Aid Office about your specific award.

Can I apply if I missed the 1st year?

Yes. Students who miss the 1st year can apply in December of their 2nd year. Applying earlier is preferred.

Does my board or city affect my chances?

No. Selection is based on merit and financial need. Your school board or city does not matter.

Is the SAT better than the LCAT for NOP?

Either is accepted. The LCAT is cheaper and enough if LUMS is your only target. The SAT is worth it only if you also plan to apply to foreign universities.

Who do I contact with eligibility questions?

The LUMS Financial Aid Office handles NOP eligibility queries and financial assessment guidance. It is located in the LUMS Student Affairs building.

Before you start, check the current cycle and deadline on the official LUMS website, and keep our LUMS NOP scholarship page handy for the key details.
