The Knight-Hennessy Scholars (KHS) program at Stanford University is one of the few graduate awards in the United States that pays for a full degree and then adds a leadership program on top. Scholars get up to three years of financial support for tuition and living costs, and they can study at any of Stanford's seven schools. It is also one of the hardest awards to win, because you have to get into a Stanford graduate program and impress a separate KHS selection panel at the same time.

This guide is for Pakistani students who are serious about graduate study at Stanford and want to know whether KHS is a realistic target. You can see the full scholarship details on our listing as well.

A Stanford degree with a leadership program attached

Every Knight-Hennessy scholar is first and foremost a normal Stanford graduate student. You enrol in a degree at one of the seven schools (business, education, engineering, humanities and sciences, law, medicine, or sustainability) and do the same coursework and research as everyone else in your program. KHS sits alongside that degree.

The KHS part is leadership development programming designed to complement your studies. The program says it prepares scholars for roles in academia, industry, government and the nonprofit sector. Each year a new cohort joins, drawn from different disciplines, nationalities and backgrounds, and the idea is that you work on projects with people far outside your own field. A PhD student in engineering might end up collaborating with someone from law or medicine.

Who does this suit? Students who already have a track record of leading something, who think beyond their own career, and who want the community as much as the money. If you only want funding and have no interest in the leadership side, you will struggle to write convincing essays, and the panel will notice.

What the money actually pays for

The funding package is broad. According to the program information, it includes:

  • Full tuition for up to three years
  • A stipend for living and academic expenses, including room and board, books and supplies
  • A travel stipend for one economy-class trip to and from Stanford each year
  • A one-time relocation stipend for newly enrolling scholars
  • Supplemental funds for academic enrichment activities in the second and third years

The annual travel stipend matters for Pakistani students, because a return trip home each year is a real cost. The relocation stipend helps with the first move. Exact amounts are not listed in our information, so check current figures on the official KHS website.

The three-year limit and longer degrees

Here is the catch people miss. KHS support runs for up to three years. Some Stanford degrees take longer than that, most obviously many PhD programs. The program advises reviewing the specific funding commitments for your chosen degree, because some programs go beyond the three-year KHS limit. Before you apply, find out how your department funds students after KHS support ends. Do not assume KHS covers your whole PhD.

The bachelor's degree date rule decides eligibility

The most common reason a strong candidate is ineligible is timing. To apply, you must have earned a U.S. bachelor's degree or equivalent in January 2020 or later. For military veterans, the cutoff is January 2018 or later. The program treats this window strictly, so check your degree completion date on your transcript or degree certificate before you spend weeks on essays.

The full eligibility conditions are:

  • You must be admitted to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program
  • Your bachelor's degree (U.S. or equivalent) must be from January 2020 or later, or January 2018 or later for military veterans
  • You must show independence of thought, purposeful leadership and a civic mindset
  • You must be able to enrol in the same year as the KHS program
  • You must not be enrolled in ineligible programs such as the Honors Cooperative Program or the Master of Liberal Arts

A few points that often confuse applicants. Having a graduate degree already does not disqualify you, as long as your first bachelor's degree was earned in January 2020 or later. There is no age limit. Students with DACA status or who are undocumented are also eligible to apply.

On nationality: the program describes its scholars as coming from around the globe and from various nationalities, and our information does not list a country restriction. Still, confirm eligibility for Pakistani applicants on the official site before applying.

Independence of thought, purposeful leadership, civic mindset

These three criteria are the whole selection philosophy. The program also says it looks for people who are curious, resilient and committed to the greater good. In practice, this means your grades and test scores get you into the Stanford program, but your essays, short answers and video decide whether you become a scholar.

Independence of thought is about showing you have reached your own conclusions, even unpopular ones, and acted on them. Purposeful leadership is not a list of society president titles. It is evidence that you started or changed something because you cared about the outcome. Civic mindset means your ambitions include other people as well as your own career.

Pakistani applicants often write essays that list achievements without explaining motivation. A panel reading thousands of applications from around the world wants to understand why you did something and what you learned, not just that you did it.

Two applications, one deadline

KHS has its own application, and it is separate from your Stanford graduate admission. You have to apply to both, separately but at the same time. Winning KHS without being admitted to a full-time Stanford graduate degree is not possible.

  1. Apply to the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program and to a full-time Stanford graduate degree program, concurrently.
  2. Submit the KHS online application by the deadline.
  3. Take part in the evaluation process, which includes a video statement.
  4. Attend the Finalist Experience if you are invited.
  5. Receive the final selection decision.

The KHS deadline is October 6, 2026, at 1:00 pm Pacific Time. Pacific Time is many hours behind Pakistan, so convert the time carefully and submit well before it, not in the final hour. Your Stanford degree program may have its own deadline, so check that separately on the department page, and confirm the exact dates on the official portal.

The application materials

The KHS application asks for:

  • The online application form
  • A resume
  • Transcripts
  • Test scores
  • Recommendation letters
  • Short answers and an essay
  • A video statement

Which tests are required depends on your degree program, so check the requirements for the specific Stanford program you are targeting. Request transcripts from your university early, because official copies can take time to arrange. Our documents checklist for international scholarships covers the general paperwork Pakistani students usually need to arrange.

Where applicants lose ground

The video statement is the part most people underestimate. Start preparing it early, not after the essays are done. Record a few practice takes, watch them back, and make sure you sound like yourself rather than reading a script.

Give the short answers proper thought. The program's own advice is to reflect deeply on your past experiences and future plans before writing. Write a rough draft, leave it for a few days, then cut anything that sounds like a CV in sentence form.

Recommendation letters should come from people who can describe your leadership and character with specific examples. A famous name who barely knows you is worth less than a supervisor who watched you build something.

Finally, do not plan on deferring. KHS does not defer scholar offers. If you win and cannot enrol that year, you have to reapply for the year you intend to start. Apply only for the year you can actually go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply if I already have a master's degree?

Yes. Holding a graduate degree does not make you ineligible, as long as you earned your first bachelor's degree in January 2020 or later.

Is there an age limit?

No. The program has no restrictions based on age. The limit that matters is the bachelor's degree date.

Can I defer my offer if I win?

No. KHS does not defer offers. If you cannot enrol, you need to reapply for the year you plan to start.

Does KHS cover a PhD that runs longer than three years?

KHS support lasts up to three years. Some degree programs run longer than that, so check how your specific Stanford program funds students in the remaining years before you apply.

Which subjects can I study?

Any full-time graduate degree offered across Stanford's seven schools, as long as it is not an ineligible program such as the Honors Cooperative Program or the Master of Liberal Arts.
