Google PhD Fellowship Program: Regions, Funding, Nomination and Documents Explained

How the Google PhD Fellowship works: the regional award amounts, why your university must nominate you, the documents in your PDF, and what Pakistani PhD students should check first.

The Google PhD Fellowship Program is a research award for PhD students working in computer science and related fields. It gives selected students money for their research and living costs, plus access to Google researchers. It is not a scholarship you can apply for on your own. Your university has to nominate you, and that one rule shapes everything about how you approach it. You can read the full scholarship details on our site, but this guide is about how the program works in practice and whether it is realistic for you.

Short version: this suits a PhD student who is already enrolled full-time at a research university, has a clear research direction in one of Google's listed areas, and has an advisor willing to push for an internal nomination. It does not suit someone still looking for a PhD admission. If you are a Pakistani student hoping this will fund your move abroad, read the eligibility section carefully before you spend time on it.

The regions list decides whether this is open to you

Fellowships are offered to students in these regions: Africa, Australia, Canada, East Asia, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, and the United States.

Pakistan is not on that list. That means a student enrolled at a university in Pakistan should not assume they can be nominated. Check the official website for your specific situation before you invest time. For a Pakistani student already doing a PhD at a university in one of the listed regions (say, in Canada, Europe or Australia), the picture is different, because the nomination comes from your home university. Even then, read the regional rules on the official site to confirm that your nationality and your institution both qualify. Do not rely on a summary for this.

Why the money looks so different from region to region

The "fully funded" label hides a lot of variation. The award is set region by region, and the amounts are not comparable. Here is how the funding is described:

RegionLengthAmount and use
AfricaUp to 3 yearsUS $15,000 for stipend and research activities
Australia and New Zealand1 yearAUD $20,000 for stipend and research activities
Canada and the United StatesUp to 2 yearsUS $85,000 per year for tuition, fees, living expenses and equipment
East Asia1 yearUS $10,000 for stipend and research activities
Europe and the Middle EastUp to 2 yearsA yearly bursary for stipend, health care, tuition and travel (amount not stated)
IndiaUp to 4 years (early-stage) or 1 year (late-stage)US $50,000 (early-stage) or US $10,000 (late-stage)
Latin AmericaUp to 2 yearsUS $15,000 per year for stipend and research activities
Southeast AsiaUp to 3 yearsUS $10,000 per year

Only the Canada and United States award is explicitly described as covering tuition, fees, living expenses and equipment. In most other regions the money is for stipend and research activities, which is closer to a top-up than a full package. If you are counting on this to pay for your whole PhD, you will probably be disappointed outside North America. Treat it as extra support on top of the funding your PhD position already gives you.

Two more details matter. The money is paid to your university, which then distributes it to you. And the university is not allowed to take overhead costs out of it, so the full award is meant to reach the fellow.

What you get beyond the cheque

Recipients get recognition from Google researchers as promising young academics and a chance to connect with a global network of researchers. For a PhD student planning a research career, that name on a CV carries weight.

The fellowship does not make you a Google employee. It also does not restrict your intellectual property, unless you do an internship at Google. If you take an internship there, read those terms separately. Receiving the award does not affect future employment opportunities or the hiring process at the company.

The research areas Google funds

The eligible fields are:

  • Computer architecture
  • Algorithms and optimization
  • Health research
  • Human-computer interaction
  • Machine learning and ML foundations
  • Machine perception
  • Natural language processing
  • Privacy, safety and security
  • Quantum computing
  • Software engineering and programming languages
  • Systems, networking and cloud computing

The areas listed in the application form may vary by region, so check the form for your region rather than this general list. Your research must also align with Google's AI Principles. If your work sits at the edge of computer science (for example, a health project with a computing angle), make the connection to one listed area obvious in your proposal.

Eligibility rules that knock people out

Most of these are simple yes or no checks. Go through them honestly before you ask your department for a nomination:

  • You must be nominated by an accredited research institution. Verify that your university is one that awards PhD degrees in computer science or adjacent fields.
  • You must be enrolled full-time in a PhD program, and stay full-time for the whole fellowship. Switching to part-time can cost you the award.
  • You cannot already be supported by a comparable industry award. Government or non-profit funding does not count against you, so a government-funded PhD student can still apply.
  • You cannot be a Google employee or a member of a Google employee's household.
  • Past awardees cannot apply again.
  • Your research must align with Google's AI Principles.

The industry award rule is the one people forget. If a company already funds your PhD, ask your graduate office whether that counts as comparable before you go any further.

Getting through your university's nomination first

You cannot apply directly. An official representative of your university submits the application during the application window. In practice, this means there are two competitions: an internal one at your university, then the global one at Google.

Universities have limits on how many students they can nominate. So your real first deadline is your department's internal deadline, which will be earlier than Google's. Contact your department or graduate school as early as you can and ask how they pick nominees. Many students lose out simply because they ask after the internal round has closed.

The steps look like this:

  1. Review the eligibility and application requirements for your region on the official website.
  2. Contact your department or graduate school about the internal nomination process.
  3. Prepare all application materials in a single, flat PDF file.
  4. Make sure your university submits the application on your behalf through the official portal during the application window.

Everything goes into one PDF, so check that every page opens correctly and nothing is missing before you hand it to your university.

The documents in your PDF

  • Your CV, with links to your website and publications
  • A research or dissertation proposal, maximum 3 pages
  • A cover sheet signed by your Department Chair
  • A short CV of your primary PhD advisor
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation
  • Academic transcripts
  • Student essay responses, where your region requires them

The signed cover sheet and your advisor's CV depend on other people, so ask for them early. If your transcripts are from Pakistan and your university asks for verified copies, our documents checklist for international scholarships covers how to get them ready.

Writing a proposal Google reviewers will rate well

Google researchers judge applications on four things: the strength of the research proposal, its impact, your academic achievements, and your leadership potential. With only 3 pages, the proposal has to work hard.

State the problem early, explain what you have already done, and say clearly where the work is going and why it matters. Reviewers want direction and potential impact, not a literature review. If your region asks for essays, use them to show leadership experience and research goals with concrete examples from your PhD so far, such as a project you led or students you mentored.

A common mistake is sending a proposal written for a general audience or copied from a thesis chapter. Write it for researchers in your exact area, who will spot vague claims quickly.

How the yearly cycle runs

For the 2026 round, the dates were:

  • March 5, 2026: applications opened
  • April 30, 2026: applications closed
  • August 31, 2026: notification of proposal decisions
  • October 31, 2026: public announcement of recipients

The 2026 window has closed. Applications typically open in March, so if you want to be considered in the next round, start talking to your department now. Confirm the exact dates for the next cycle on the official portal, since they can change from year to year.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to the Google PhD Fellowship myself?

No. Your university must nominate you and submit the application. Contact your department or graduate school to learn about the internal nomination process.

Can a student at a Pakistani university apply?

Pakistan is not among the regions listed for the program. Check the official website for your nationality and institution before assuming you are eligible. Pakistani students enrolled at universities in one of the listed regions should check the regional rules there.

Will I become a Google employee if I win?

No. Recipients do not become Google employees, and the award does not affect future employment opportunities or the hiring process.

I already have a government scholarship. Can I still apply?

Yes, as far as that funding goes. Government and non-profit funding are exempt. Only students supported by a comparable industry award are ineligible.

Does the fellowship pay my tuition?

It depends on your region. The Canada and United States award covers tuition, fees, living expenses and equipment, and the Europe and Middle East bursary includes tuition. Most other regions fund stipend and research activities only.

Can I apply again if I won before?

No. Past awardees are not eligible to apply again.
