The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the few awards that pays the entire cost of a postgraduate degree at the University of Cambridge, and it is open to citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom. That includes Pakistan. Around 80 scholarships are given each year, and roughly two-thirds of them go to PhD students. If you are aiming for a doctorate, an MLitt or a one-year postgraduate course at Cambridge and you have a real record of working for other people, this is the award to plan your whole application around. You can see the full scholarship details on our scholarship page.
The programme was set up in October 2000 with a US$210 million donation from the Gates Foundation. Its stated aim is to build a global network of future leaders who are committed to improving the lives of others. That last phrase matters more than most applicants realise, and we will come back to it.

Two rounds, and only one of them is yours
Gates Cambridge runs two separate selection rounds. The US round is only for US citizens living in the United States, with a deadline of 14 October 2026 and about 25 awards. Everyone else, Pakistani students included, goes into the international round, which has about 55 awards.
The international round is tied to the University of Cambridge postgraduate funding competition. This is why there is no single deadline. Depending on your course, your funding deadline is either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027. The deadline belongs to the course, not to you, so check the University Course Directory for the exact date attached to the programme you want. Applying by 6 January when your course closed for funding in December means you simply will not be considered for the scholarship.
What full cost actually means at Cambridge
The word "fully funded" gets thrown around loosely. Here it covers a fairly long list:
- The University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate.
- A maintenance allowance for a single student, covering 12 months, provided for up to 4 years for PhD scholars. Check the current annual figure on the official website, as the rate is set each academic year (the latest figure we hold is the 2025-26 rate).
- One economy single airfare at the start of the course and one at the end.
- Inbound visa costs and the Immigration Health Surcharge.
- Academic development funding from 750 pounds up to 4,000 pounds for conferences and courses.
- A Dependent Children Allowance of up to 12,793 pounds per year for one child and up to 18,244 pounds per year for two or more children.
- Continued maintenance allowance while on PhD fieldwork.
- Maternity or paternity funding, letting you intermit your studies for up to 6 months while still receiving the maintenance allowance.
There is also discretionary hardship funding. The visa and health surcharge coverage is a big deal for Pakistani students, because those are upfront costs that usually come out of a family's savings before a single lecture. The flights help too.
One gap to plan for: there is no funding for a partner. If you are married and want your spouse to come with you, the children's allowance does not stretch to them, and you will need your own money for their visa and living costs. Our guide to bank statements and proof of funds explains what that usually involves.
Courses that are in, and courses that are out
You must be applying for a full-time PhD, a full-time MLitt, or a full-time one-year postgraduate course. Part-time PhD applicants are also eligible under a pilot scheme, which is useful if you are working in Pakistan and cannot leave your job for the whole programme.
A number of courses are excluded. You cannot use Gates Cambridge for:
- undergraduate degrees
- the MBA, the Executive MBA or the Master of Finance
- the PGCE
- MBBChir Clinical Studies
- other professional and non-standard courses on the exclusion list
You also cannot apply if you have already started a course and want funding for the rest of it. That said, a current Cambridge student finishing an MPhil can apply for Gates funding for a new course, such as a PhD. The rule is about topping up a course you are already on, not about being at Cambridge already.
Before you write a word of your statement, confirm that your chosen course is not on the exclusion list. It sounds obvious, but business and finance applicants do get caught by this.
The four things the committee is judging
Every applicant is assessed on four criteria: academic excellence, reasons for choice of course, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and a capacity for leadership. Selection is needs-blind, so your family's finances play no part. A poor student and a wealthy one are judged on the same terms.
Here is where Pakistani applicants with strong grades often lose out. They write a statement that is entirely about research and career, and treat "improving the lives of others" as a closing line. The committee reads it as a full criterion, equal in weight to your transcript. If you have taught at a community school, built something for patients at a district hospital, run a volunteer project, or worked in policy that affected real people, that belongs in the middle of your application with specifics: what you did, for whom, and what changed. Then connect it to what you plan to do after Cambridge.
Leadership is the other criterion people treat lazily. Being "president of the society" is a title. Leadership in this sense is evidence that you got other people to do something difficult. Write about the difficulty.
And "reasons for choice of course" means why this course, at Cambridge, now. A generic paragraph about Cambridge's reputation does nothing for you. Name the department, the supervisor or the research group, and explain why this programme fits a plan you can describe.
What goes into the application
There is no separate Gates Cambridge form floating around somewhere else. You apply through the University of Cambridge postgraduate applicant portal and fill in the Gates Cambridge section inside that same application. The core pieces are:
- Your university admission application for the course.
- A Gates Cambridge reference, in addition to your academic references.
- Academic transcripts.
- A research proposal or summary, if you are applying for a PhD or a research MPhil.
Incomplete applications are not considered, and that includes references. Your referees submit their letters directly, which means their deadline is your deadline. Professors in Pakistan are often busy and slow with email, so ask early, give them your CV and a short note on what the Gates criteria are, and follow up politely a couple of weeks before the cut-off. For general paperwork such as transcripts, our documents checklist for international scholarships is a useful companion.
How the application moves, step by step
- Choose your course and confirm in the University Course Directory that it is eligible and which funding deadline it uses.
- If applying for a PhD, contact potential supervisors early and develop your research proposal with their input where possible.
- Apply for admission to the course through the Cambridge applicant portal.
- Complete the Gates Cambridge section within that application form.
- Submit all supporting documents, including transcripts and references, by the deadline for your course.
The 2026-27 timeline
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 11 September 2026 | Applications open |
| 14 October 2026 | US round deadline (US citizens resident in the US only) |
| 8 December 2026 | International deadline for some courses |
| 14 December 2026 | US round outcomes |
| 6 January 2027 | International deadline for other courses |
| 8 March 2027 | International round outcomes |
If you are reading this in autumn, the window is open now and the earlier December date may be close. Treat 8 December as your real deadline until the Course Directory tells you otherwise. Confirm every date on the official portal before you rely on it, since course deadlines differ.
Who should go for it, and who should think twice
This award suits you if you already have an excellent academic record, a clear research or study plan that genuinely needs Cambridge, and a track record of doing something useful for others that you can describe concretely. PhD applicants have the best odds simply because most awards go to doctoral students.
It is a weaker fit if your main goal is a professional degree like an MBA (excluded), if your service record is thin and you were planning to describe intentions rather than actions, or if your only reason for Cambridge is its name. With around 55 international awards spread across the whole world, a polished but generic application will not stand out.
Common mistakes we see:
- Missing the December funding deadline because the applicant assumed January applied to everyone.
- Applying for an excluded course such as the MBA, MFin or PGCE.
- Leaving references until the last week.
- Writing a PhD proposal with no contact with a potential supervisor.
- Treating social commitment as a decorative sentence instead of evidence.
Once you have an offer, the next steps are the UK student visa and document attestation. Gates covers the visa cost and the health surcharge, but you still need a clean application. See our common visa rejection reasons for Pakistani students before you file. For other options in the same country, browse all UK scholarships.
The payoff beyond money is the network. Gates Cambridge has an active alumni community of more than 1,700 scholars across 112 countries.
Frequently asked questions
Can Pakistani students apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship?
Yes. Citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom are eligible, and Pakistani applicants compete in the international round.
Do I need to submit a separate scholarship application?
No. You apply for your course through the Cambridge postgraduate applicant portal and complete the Gates Cambridge section within that same form, along with a Gates Cambridge reference.
Does the scholarship pay for my spouse?
No funding is provided for a partner. There is a Dependent Children Allowance of up to 12,793 pounds per year for one child and up to 18,244 pounds for two or more children.
Are all Cambridge master's courses eligible?
One-year postgraduate courses are generally eligible, but professional and non-standard degrees such as the MBA, MFin, PGCE and clinical medical studies are excluded. Check your course before applying.
I am already doing an MPhil at Cambridge. Can I apply for a PhD with Gates funding?
Yes. Current Cambridge students can apply for a new postgraduate course such as a PhD. What you cannot do is seek funding for the remainder of a course you have already started.
Does my family income affect my chances?
No. The process is needs-blind, so financial circumstances are not considered. You are judged on academic excellence, reasons for course choice, commitment to others and leadership.
