Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship: Eligibility, Coverage and How to Apply from Pakistan

A practical guide to the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship: a tuition-funded, part-time UK Master's you study from Pakistan, with a direct application to the Commission.

Most Pakistani students who hear "Commonwealth Scholarship" picture a fully funded year in Britain: flights, a monthly stipend, a room in a UK city. The Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship is a different animal. It pays for a part-time Master's that you study online from a selected UK university while you stay at home in Pakistan. You never relocate. You keep your job, your family stays where it is, and the degree still comes from a UK university.

That trade-off makes it a strong fit for some people and a poor fit for others. This guide walks through what it pays for, how the direct application works, and where applicants tend to slip up. For the condensed version, see the full scholarship details.

A UK Master's you study from Pakistan

The scholarship is run by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), which is funded by the UK FCDO. The Commission runs several strands. The better known Master's and PhD strands bring students to the UK. This one funds remote study only, and it is limited to Master's level.

The courses are not open-ended. You choose from a list of distance-learning programmes at participating UK universities, and that list changes. If the subject you want is not on the current list, this scholarship cannot help you this cycle, however good your profile is.

Who does it suit? Working professionals who cannot or do not want to step away from a career for a year. People with caring responsibilities. Anyone whose main goal is the qualification and the learning itself rather than living abroad. Who should probably skip it? Students hoping to use a UK degree as a route to settling or working in Britain, and students who want the campus experience, networking and in-person contact that a residential programme gives. The degree carries the same university name as on-campus study, but the experience and networking opportunities are meaningfully different.

Tuition only, and why that makes sense here

The scholarship covers tuition fees for the distance-learning programme. That is the whole package. There is no flight allowance, no living stipend and no relocation money, because none of those costs apply when you study from home.

This is why it is listed as partial funding even though the fee itself is paid. Your day-to-day costs stay your responsibility, and so does anything the course needs beyond tuition. In practice that means a reliable internet connection, a laptop that can handle video lectures and online submissions, and protected hours every week. Before you apply, be honest with yourself about whether you can keep a part-time study schedule going alongside work for the length of the course. A funded place you cannot finish helps nobody.

Pakistanis are eligible, but the 2:1 bar is real

The scholarship is open to citizens or residents of eligible Commonwealth countries, and Pakistan qualifies. Beyond nationality, the published requirements are short:

  • A minimum 2:1 honours degree or equivalent.
  • You must remain resident in your home country throughout the programme.

The degree requirement is where many Pakistani applicants need to think carefully. Pakistani transcripts usually show a CGPA or percentage rather than a UK class, so "2:1 or equivalent" has to be read against how your own university grades. Check what the Commission and your chosen UK university accept as equivalent before you invest time in the application.

The residence rule is not a formality either. The whole point of this strand is that you study without leaving. If you are already planning to move abroad for work or another degree during the course, this is the wrong scholarship for you.

The paperwork is short, so make each piece count

The listed documents are:

  1. Passport or national ID
  2. Academic transcripts
  3. Reference letters

A short list does not mean an easy application. With fewer documents, each one carries more weight. Your transcripts are what prove the 2:1 equivalent, so make sure they are complete and legible. Your referees should be people who can speak to your academic ability and to your capacity to handle part-time study while working, since that is exactly the question a reviewer will have about a distance learner.

The official portal may ask for more than this list during the current cycle, so treat it as a starting point. Our documents checklist for international scholarships covers how Pakistani applicants usually prepare transcripts and reference letters, and the IBCC and MOFA attestation guide is useful if you are asked for attested copies.

You apply straight to the Commission, with no nominating agency

This is the single biggest procedural difference from the other Commonwealth strands. The residential Master's and PhD scholarships go through a national nominating agency. The Distance Learning Scholarship does not. You apply directly to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission.

The route looks like this:

  1. Check the current cycle on the official CSC portal, including the opening date, the deadline and the list of participating courses.
  2. Select a programme from the current list of participating distance-learning courses.
  3. Apply directly to the Commission, not through any nominating body in Pakistan.

Applicants who have read about the residential strands sometimes wait for a national nomination round that never comes for this scholarship. Others assume the course choice is flexible. Neither is true here. The course must be on the list, and the application is yours to submit directly.

A later deadline than the residential strands

The deadline usually falls around March 31, which is later in the year than the residential Master's and PhD strands. The opening date is not confirmed, and the exact deadline needs to be checked each cycle on the official portal. Details for this strand are less consistently documented than for the residential ones, so do not rely on last year's dates.

The later deadline is useful if you missed the residential rounds or decided late that relocating is not realistic for you. Do not treat it as extra time to start from zero, though. Choosing a course from the participating list and lining up referees both take weeks.

Where applicants go wrong

From the way this strand is set up, a few mistakes are predictable.

  • Applying with the residential strands in mind. Expecting a stipend or travel money leads to disappointment; this is tuition only.
  • Picking a course before checking the current participating list. Your preferred programme may not be on it this cycle.
  • Waiting for a nominating agency. For this strand you go directly to the Commission.
  • Assuming last cycle's deadline still applies. Confirm the date on the official site every year.
  • Underestimating part-time study. Evening and weekend coursework on top of a full-time job is hard to keep up for the length of a Master's.
  • Planning to move abroad mid-course. You must stay resident in your home country throughout.

If you are weighing this against other options, our all United Kingdom scholarships guide sets out the residential alternatives side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to move to the UK for this scholarship?

No. It funds distance-learning study, and you remain in your home country for the whole programme. Staying resident at home is in fact a condition of the award.

Do I apply through a nominating agency like the other Commonwealth scholarships?

No. This is one of the few Commonwealth strands where you apply directly to the Commission rather than through a national nominating agency.

Does it cover living costs or a stipend?

No. It covers tuition fees for the distance-learning Master's only. There are no travel or living-cost components, because you are not relocating.

Can I study any subject I like?

Only subjects on the current list of participating distance-learning courses at UK universities. Check the list on the official portal for the cycle you are applying in.

Is a Pakistani CGPA accepted in place of a 2:1?

The requirement is a minimum 2:1 honours degree or equivalent. How your CGPA or percentage maps to that depends on your institution and the assessors, so confirm the equivalence with the Commission or the university before applying.

When is the deadline?

Usually around March 31, later than the residential strands, but the exact date and the opening date should be confirmed on the official portal each cycle.

Before you start, check the current cycle, course list and deadline on the official Commonwealth Scholarship Commission website, and keep the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship page handy for the key details.
