Most scholarships reward the students who already have the most: top grades, test scores, a polished CV. The Albukhary International University (AIU) Scholarship in Malaysia works the other way round. AIU, in Alor Setar, was set up to give university education to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, and the scholarship is funded by the Albukhary Foundation. Financial need is a key part of selection, alongside motivation and how well you communicate. Grades matter, but they are not the whole contest.
If you are a Pakistani student who has finished Matric/FSc (or equivalent), whose family genuinely cannot pay for a degree, and who has not yet taken IELTS, this is one of the few undergraduate scholarships built with you in mind. You can see the full scholarship details separately. This guide covers how the application really works and where people trip up.

Two tiers, and you do not get to pick yours
The scholarship comes in two tiers. A fully funded award covers full tuition, free on-campus accommodation, a monthly living allowance and basic medical insurance. A partially funded award covers only 1-2 of those benefits, for example tuition only or accommodation only.
You cannot apply for a specific tier. The Foundation decides after reviewing your application, based on how much financial need you have shown. This is why the documents about your family's income matter so much: they decide whether you are selected and also which package you end up with.
The source does not publish a figure for the monthly living allowance, so do not plan your budget around a number you have seen on a forum. Wait for the offer letter, which sets out the terms.
What neither tier pays for
Flight tickets and visa processing fees are not covered by either tier. You will need to fund your own travel to Malaysia. For a family that is applying precisely because money is tight, this is a real cost, so start thinking about it before you are selected rather than after.
Why the 17-20 age limit and the single-status rule catch people out
The eligibility list is short, and some of it is stricter than students expect. To apply as an international student you need to be:
- aged 17-20
- single (unmarried)
- from a financially disadvantaged background
- a high school graduate (Matric/FSc or equivalent) who meets the academic requirements of your chosen program
- from a family where no one has previously been sponsored by the Albukhary Foundation
Pakistani nationals are eligible. The age window is the one that catches people. If you took a gap year or two after FSc and are now past 20, this scholarship is probably not for you. The family rule also matters: if an older sibling or cousin in your immediate family was an Albukhary scholar, check carefully before you spend time on an application.
Eight programs to choose from, and you will rank four
The undergraduate programs covered are Computer Science, Economics, Business Administration, Early Childhood Education, Social Development, Media and Communication, Politics and International Relations, and Data Science. On the portal you select 4 program preferences.
Students tend to put Computer Science and Data Science first because of the job market, which is fine. But think about your fourth choice too. If your heart is in Social Development or Early Childhood Education, that fits closely with what the Foundation is trying to do, and you will find it easier to write a convincing motivational letter about it.
No IELTS, and what the Language Centre means for you
You do not need IELTS or any English test at the time of application. If you are admitted but your English is limited, you start at the AIU Language Centre, a pre-degree English program that typically lasts 3-12 months depending on your level at entry. Your accommodation, living allowance and medical insurance continue during this period. Once you reach the required English level, you begin your Bachelor's degree.
For students from Urdu-medium schools, this is a real advantage. Still, if you do have evidence of English ability (English-medium schooling, good English results), include it. English proficiency proof is listed as optional, but it helps.
The home photographs and income papers are the heart of the application
AIU verifies financial need with concrete evidence, and the document list reflects that. You will need:
- A valid passport
- High school certificates and complete transcripts
- English proficiency proof (optional)
- Your father's and mother's identification documents
- Your father's and mother's income slips
- Proof of parents' income: a salary slip, an income certificate, or, for self-employed parents, a statement in the online format stamped by the Union Council
- Utility bills (electricity and water)
- Family home photographs: the outside view, the living room and the kitchen
- A referee verification letter (optional)
- A photo of yourself, uploaded with the documents
The home photographs are a required upload, and the selection committee takes them seriously. They let the committee see household circumstances directly instead of relying only on an income certificate, which may not show the real situation. Take clear, honest photos in good light. Do not tidy the house up to look better off, and do not try to make it look worse. The aim is an accurate picture, and the photos sit next to your bills and income papers, so they should tell the same story.
If your father or mother runs a shop, drives a rickshaw, farms or does any other self-employed work, there is no salary slip to upload. Get the Union Council-stamped income statement. The source says a format template for it is available online. Leaving this to the last week is a common mistake, because getting a stamp from a local office can take time.
Every file must be 1MB or smaller. Scan or compress documents in advance so you are not fighting the upload limit on the day. Our documents checklist for international scholarships has general tips on preparing scans.
Writing the three 150-word answers
The motivational letter is split into 3 compulsory questions, each needing at least 150 words:
- Why should the Albukhary Foundation sponsor you?
- How will the scholarship impact your future?
- What makes you a suitable candidate?
The first question is where you explain your financial situation and family background, and why you cannot reach university without this support. Be specific and plain. "My family is poor" says very little. Explaining who earns in the household, what they do, how many people depend on that income and what you have done to keep studying says a lot.
The second question is about your goals and how the degree changes your path. Tie it to the program you chose. The third is about your character, values, academic strengths and what you have done for your community. If you have tutored younger children, helped in a family business or volunteered locally, this is where it belongs. The source advises explaining how you will give back to your community, and that idea fits naturally here.
Avoid copied templates. The committee reads hundreds of applications and values students who are honest and clear about their circumstances.
Applying on the portal
- Create an account on the AIU application portal.
- Log in and select your 4 program preferences.
- Fill in your personal information, contact details, referee information (name, email and relationship, for example a teacher) and academic qualifications.
- Write the answers to the 3 motivational letter questions.
- Upload your documents, keeping each file at 1MB or less.
- Submit, ideally well before July 31.
- If you are shortlisted, attend the interview.
If you spot an error after submitting, the source says you can request changes by email to AIU. Check the official website for the current contact address before writing.
Why July 31 is the last date, not the target date
The portal is open year-round and the deadline is July 31 each year. That later date gives you more preparation time than scholarships with January to March deadlines. The catch is that scholarship slots are filled progressively, and earlier submissions get earlier interview invitations. Treating July 31 as your target means competing for whatever is left.
After you apply, the interview call can come in 1-2 weeks or take 1-2 months. The interview is conducted online and can be lengthy, so prepare to talk about your background, your goals, your financial situation and why you chose your program. Results arrive by email roughly 3-4 months later, with an offer letter and terms for successful candidates. AIU has intake periods in January and July, and you enrol in the semester that follows. Because the timings are given as ranges, confirm current dates on the official AIU website.
Life in Alor Setar, and travel paperwork
Alor Setar is a quiet, affordable city in northern Malaysia near the Thai border, very different from Kuala Lumpur. The campus is fully residential, so you live, study and socialise on campus. Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country where halal food is everywhere and English is widely spoken. For a first-time traveller from Pakistan this is a gentle start, though students who want a big-city life may find it slow.
The Student Pass is processed after arrival by the university, but you still need a single-entry visa to enter Malaysia. The Malaysian High Commission in Islamabad is at 224 Margalla Road, F-10/2, Islamabad (+92-51-2294090). Once you are in Malaysia, the Pakistan High Commission in Kuala Lumpur handles consular services for Pakistani students.
Who should apply, and who should not
Apply if you are 17-20, unmarried, from a family with genuine financial hardship, and willing to document that hardship openly. Applicants from rural areas or Urdu-medium schools who would normally be shut out by IELTS requirements are a good fit.
Think twice if your family is comfortably middle class. This scholarship is not a merit award with a needs box attached, and the evidence will show where you stand. You would be better served by merit-based options in our all Malaysia scholarships guide. Also be realistic about the flight and visa costs, and about the possibility of being offered only a partial award.
Frequently asked questions
Can Pakistani students apply for the AIU scholarship?
Yes. Pakistani nationals are eligible, provided they meet the other conditions: aged 17-20, single, from a financially disadvantaged background, with Matric/FSc or equivalent and no family member previously sponsored by the Albukhary Foundation.
Do I need IELTS?
No. No English test is required at application. If your English is limited after admission, you study at the AIU Language Centre for 3-12 months first, with your scholarship benefits continuing.
Can I choose the fully funded tier?
No. The Foundation decides your tier based on the level of financial need you show. A partial award covers 1-2 benefits, such as tuition only or accommodation only.
Does the scholarship pay for my flight to Malaysia?
No. Flight tickets and visa processing fees are not covered by either tier.
My parents are self-employed. What income proof do I submit?
Submit an income statement stamped by your Union Council. The source says a format template is available online. Arrange it early.
When will I hear back?
Interview calls can come 1-2 weeks or 1-2 months after you apply, and results arrive by email roughly 3-4 months later. Applying early tends to mean an earlier interview.
Before you submit, check the current requirements and dates on the official AIU website, and keep the full AIU scholarship details open while you prepare your documents.
